Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC), an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
FSC has developed Forest Management Standards and Chain of Custody Standards to which organisations can voluntarily adhere and get certified against.
Certificate holders are able to use the FSC name, initials and logo on the certified products they sell as specified in the Standards.
Forestry certification is a voluntary, market mechanism designed to improve management of the world’s forests. The principles that underlay forest certification include:
What it means for the consumer
A consumer can purchase FSC certified products with a clear conscience that they been produced following responsible forestry practices, e.g.- The trees that are harvested are replaced or allowed to regenerate naturally.
- Parts of the forest are protected entirely, in order to protect rare animals and plants.
- The rights of indigenous people to use the forest have been protected.
- The forest owner has used local workers to run the forest, and provide training, safety equipment and a decent salary.
- All the wood is tracked from the forest to the store. Every link between the forest and the consumer is certified to make it clearly identifiable which wood is FSC certified and which is not.
What are the benefits of having it
Deforestation is a global problem contributing to natural resources depletion, ecosystems destruction and affecting communities which depend on forest.
The FSC label guarantees that the product meets responsible forestry practices giving an assurance that timber resources are sustainably used and our future generations will be able to enjoy the benefits of the forest.
Also, it help organisations to meet responsible sourcing standards which are more and more widespread in the construction industry as well as requirements of the European Timber Regulation (EUTR), legislation applicable to timber-based products in the framework of the EU Policy on fighting illegal logging.
FSC maintains a database of certified companies, to enable potential customers to check a company is legitimate in the claims it makes about FSC certified status. See http://info.fsc.org/ for details.
What is Chain of Custody?
Chain of Custody (COC) Certification provides independent evidence that forest products like timber, joinery products and sheet materials originate from responsibly managed forests. When a product has COC certification it means that there is an unbroken and documented chain of ownership (custody) all the way from the forest, via the mill, the importer, the manufacturer and supplier(s) to the end user.
